Matthias Pintscher
President of the Composition Jury 2017
Biography
An equally accomplished conductor and composer, Matthias Pintscher has created significant works for the world’s leading orchestras and regularly conducts throughout Europe, the United States and Australia. His works are known for the delicate sound world they inhabit, the intricacy of their construction and their precision of expression. Musical Director of the Ensemble Intercontemporain and Professor at the Juilliard School, he became Principal Conductor of the Lucerne Festival Academy in 2016/17. He is also Artist in Association with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the inaugural Composer in Residence and featured artist at the new Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg.
Pintscher regularly works with leading contemporary music ensembles, such as the Sharoun Ensemble, as well as with many orchestras. His work is performed by soloists such as Peter Zimmermann, Truls Mørk and Emmanuel Pahud. His works are published exclusively by Bärenreiter, and recordings of his compositions can be found on Kairos, EMI, Teldec, Wergo, and Winter & Winter. Matthias Pintscher is a successful and prolific composer. He has created two operas: Thomas Chatterton, an order from the Dresden Opera and L’Espace dernier, performed as world premiere at the Opéra de Paris. He has also composed many works for orchestra, the latest of which, Idyll, was premiered by the Cleveland Orchestra in October 2014. Alisa Weilerstein has recently premiered his new cello concert.

NOTE ON THE PROGRAMME:
By placing contemporary creation at the heart of its artistic projects, the Geneva Competition wants to act as both a pioneer and a militant. In the same way as we try to refresh musical interpretation by promoting young talent from all over the world, it is vital that the music itself regenerates and stays up-to-date by giving creativity a deserving place. Since 2013, our Composition Prize has shown that it is possible to consider composition as a discipline in its own right, and to view its winners as virtuosos and its finals as events for the general public. We continue to believe that this is worthwhile and are now broadening the competition to include a work for solo clarinet and orchestra.
